Coming of Jesus Nativity Story Advent Calendar

The Story Told in Twenty-Four Pieces

Door one holds the Star of Bethlehem, a small crystal point catching light on a golden stand. As the days progress, the figures build outward — an angel, Mary and Joseph, a donkey, a stable, an ox and lamb, shepherds, then finally the three wise men with their camel, arriving last near door twenty-four beside Mary, Joseph, and the manger itself. This is not apparel, and the section that would normally cover fit is replaced here with what actually matters for a set like this: how the pieces fit together into one continuous scene rather than 24 unrelated figures.

An 800-Year-Old Tradition

The nativity scene as a physical display traces back to a specific place and moment: Greccio, Italy, on Christmas Eve of 1223, when Francis of Assisi staged what’s widely considered the first live nativity. Francis had traveled to the Holy Land a few years earlier and visited the actual site of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, an experience that reportedly deepened his devotion and left him wanting to give people something more immersive than a spoken retelling. With permission from Pope Honorius III, he arranged a cave outside Greccio with live animals and a hay-filled manger, recreating the birth scene so that, in the words of his early biographer, people could see with their own eyes what the child endured. That reenactment became the template for the miniature nativity sets built every December since, including the one filling this calendar’s 24 doors.

Building the Scene Piece by Piece

Unlike a typical advent calendar where each door holds an unrelated item, this set is designed to assemble into a single tableau. Early doors introduce individual figures — the angel, the donkey, a stable structure — while later ones add the shepherds, the choir of angels, and finally the three wise men bearing their gifts alongside a loaded camel. Small details carry real weight in the piece: a lantern lit gold, an ornate treasure chest for the wise men’s gifts, and a final archway framing Mary, Joseph, and the newborn child together, meant to sit as the visual centerpiece once the full set is assembled.

Displaying the Complete Set

This falls under JULIEDIARY’s confirmed advent calendar spec: 24 individually sealed drawers built into a stacked, book-style box, opened one per day through December. Each figure is high-quality and hand-painted in deep blues, golds, and jewel tones, and every piece includes a small hanging loop, so the completed scene can be arranged on a mantel or shelf, or hung individually across a tree as an alternative to a static display.

Key Details

The calendar houses 24 individually sealed drawers, each revealing a figure or element that builds into a complete nativity scene, from the Star of Bethlehem and angels to the shepherds, wise men, and a final Mary-and-Joseph centerpiece. It follows JULIEDIARY’s confirmed advent calendar construction, with a stacked drawer box and high-quality, hand-painted figures built for assembled or hung display.
