Hispanic Heritage Month WNBA Basketball Jersey

A Guitar and a Sunburst Where the Team Crest Usually Sits

A hand-painted guitar sits low on the chest, ringed by a small sunburst and a scatter of dot-work, while a wide mandala medallion spreads across the lower half of the jersey like a piece of Talavera tile blown up to fabric scale. Above it all, “Hispanic Heritage Month” runs in cream block letters, and the WNBA logo glows orange against a deep forest-green body. This WNBA Hispanic Heritage Month jersey wears its theme up front instead of tucking it into a side patch.

Why September 15 Matters

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 every year, and that specific start date isn’t random — it lines up with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, all of which broke from Spanish rule on the same day in 1821. Mexico’s independence day falls the next day, and Chile’s follows two days after that, which is how a single week of observance signed into law in 1968 eventually stretched into a full month by 1988. The WNBA has leaned into the occasion for years, with teams and staff across the league — from trainers to franchise stars — using September as a reason to spotlight the Latina and Latin American presence that’s been part of the sport since its earliest seasons.

Reading the Pattern

The folk art guitar on the chest nods to the role music plays in Hispanic and Latino celebration, from mariachi to salsa to bachata, rather than pointing at any single country’s tradition. The sunburst mandala repeated in the lower panel borrows its circular, radiating structure from ceramic tile work found across Mexico and Central America — the kind of pattern you’d see on a plaza floor or a hand-painted plate. Gold trim runs the collar, armholes, and side seams, cutting a warm line against the green so the design reads clearly from a distance, and a small team crest sits on the collar so the piece still identifies with a specific WNBA franchise even while the front stays focused on the heritage theme.

Fit & Construction

A sleeveless tank cut with a V-neck collar, built from a lightweight, moisture-wicking mesh similar to what on-court jerseys use, sized to run true for a relaxed, athletic fit rather than a compression cut. It layers easily over a long-sleeve compression shirt for cooler weather, or works fine worn straight with shorts or joggers for a game-day look that doesn’t require the rest of the outfit to match.

Key Details

The jersey is built around a forest-green body with gold trim at the collar, armholes, and side seams, and centers a hand-painted guitar and sunburst medallion on the chest above a large mandala pattern across the lower front. “Hispanic Heritage Month” runs in cream lettering with the WNBA logo above it, and a team crest sits on the collar to tie the design to a specific franchise. Construction details follow general basketball-jersey expectations, since no official spec has been confirmed for this category yet.
