Medieval Cat Advent Calendar

Medieval Cat Advent Calendar

The Bagpipe-Playing Cat on the Cover

The illustration wrapping this box shows a cat mid-performance, paws braced against a set of bagpipes, framed by the gold scrollwork and vine borders typical of an illuminated manuscript page. Open the calendar and the cast expands into a full medieval court: a crowned king cat, a jester with bells on his cap, a knight in full armor, a nun in a dark habit, even a cat riding a snail. This is not apparel, and the section that would normally cover fit is replaced here with something more relevant to a figurine collection — what each character represents and how the display comes together.

A Real Habit of Medieval Scribes

The bagpipe-playing cat isn’t an invented gag — it’s a direct callback to a genuine, well-documented quirk of medieval manuscript art. Monks and scribes illustrating books of hours and psalters in the 13th and 14th centuries regularly filled the margins with cats doing distinctly human things: playing bagpipes, fiddles, and drums, wearing a bishop’s mitre, riding goats, churning butter. Illuminated works like the Luttrell Psalter and the Maastricht Hours are still studied specifically for this kind of playful marginalia, where artists used animal caricature to add humor or gentle satire to otherwise solemn religious texts. Historians have even noted a specific reason the bagpipes came up so often: the instrument’s wailing tone was thought to echo a cat’s own caterwaul, making it an easy visual joke for scribes centuries ago. This medieval cat advent calendar pulls that exact tradition into figurine form rather than inventing a new joke from scratch.

A Full Court, Not Just One Costume

The set spans a wide range of medieval roles rather than repeating the same royal cat in different colors. Alongside the king, jester, and knight sit a friar in brown robes, a scribe seated at a writing desk, a falconer, and an angel with feathered wings — even a mermaid-tailed cat and one riding a snail like a mount, both pulling directly from the stranger corners of manuscript marginalia. Fabric colors lean into a deep, period-accurate palette of burgundy, forest green, and gold trim, keeping the whole cast visually unified even as each figure’s role changes completely.

Displaying the Collection

This falls under JULIEDIARY’s confirmed advent calendar spec: 24 individually sealed compartments inside a sturdy printed box, opened one per day. Each figure is high-quality and hand-painted in fine detail, small enough to line up on a shelf or windowsill once the full court is revealed, and detailed enough to work as a standalone collectible for anyone drawn to medieval art or manuscript history well beyond the countdown itself.

Key Details

The calendar houses 24 individually sealed doors, each revealing a different cat figure dressed as a medieval character, spanning royalty, clergy, knights, and stranger marginalia-inspired figures like a mermaid cat and a snail-riding cat. It follows JULIEDIARY’s confirmed advent calendar construction, with a printed display box and high-quality, hand-painted figures built for shelf display.
