A Whole Campsite Inside a Glass Ball

Snoopy sits cross-legged by a small campfire, marshmallow on a stick, wearing a green scout hat and a red neckerchief. Beside him, Woodstock — matching hat and all — sits at the same fire, a canvas tent stitched “Beagle Scouts” pitched behind them both, mountains and pine trees filling the background inside the clear glass. This is not apparel, and the section that would normally cover fit and fabric is replaced here with something more fitting for a scene like this — where the Beagle Scouts actually came from, and what the piece is built from.

A Pun That Became a Fifty-Year Tradition

Snoopy first put on a scout hat in the Peanuts comic strip on May 13, 1974, introducing himself to Lucy as a “tenderpaw.” The troop’s now-familiar name — a pun on Eagle Scout, the highest rank in traditional Scouting — showed up the very next day, and Woodstock and his fellow birds joined the ranks less than a month later, on June 9, 1974. Real Scouting groups noticed almost immediately: a troop in Erie, Pennsylvania, wrote to Charles Schulz that same year asking permission to use Snoopy as their mascot, and he said yes. Schulz reportedly drew on his own military service for the material, having served as a staff sergeant who slept in tents and led young soldiers decades before he put Snoopy in a scout hat. The bit stuck around in the strip for over 25 years and has since carried into modern Peanuts media, including Apple TV+’s Camp Snoopy series.

The Scene Behind the Glass

The tableau inside this piece pulls specific, recurring details straight from the comic’s version of camping — a canvas tent, a hiking pack propped against a log, a lantern hanging from the tent pole, all rendered in miniature behind the campfire scene up front. A brass plaque at the base of the ornament reads “Beagle Scouts, Est. 1974,” anchoring the piece to that exact comic-strip debut date rather than a generic camping motif.

What the Ornament Is Made Of

This falls under JULIEDIARY’s confirmed composite ball ornament spec: a lightweight composite material finished with a glossy, light-reflective coating, shaped into the classic round ball form and fitted with a pre-attached hanging string, so it goes straight onto the tree with no assembly needed. The lightweight build keeps it branch-safe even on a real tree, and since it’s rated for indoor use only, it works best hung somewhere protected rather than on an outdoor wreath or porch display. Care is simple — dust with a dry cloth, skip water or harsh chemicals, and store it in a cushioned container between seasons so the sculpted scene inside stays intact year to year.

Key Details

The ornament is a clear ball housing a sculpted campfire scene with Snoopy and Woodstock in matching scout gear, a canvas “Beagle Scouts” tent, and a “Beagle Scouts, Est. 1974” plaque at the base, referencing Snoopy’s actual 1974 comic-strip debut as a scout. Construction follows a general expectation for composite ball ornaments, since no official spec has been confirmed for the category yet, and the build is high-quality throughout.
